This is a brilliant time to join our business. We are on an exciting growth journey to become the UK’s most loved retirement expert.

Purpose

We are working to revolutionise retirement planning and financial wellbeing for new generations of retirees. Our mission is to empower individuals to navigate the complexities of retirement with confidence through innovative, user-friendly digital solutions.

This role is critical in creating the technology to power our vision. As Head of Engineering you will shape the technical direction and engineering culture of a new function, working alongside the product, design and marketing functions to create solutions which support customers on their retirement journey.

You will balance hands on coding and solution design with growing and leading a high-performing engineering team. Balancing engineering with strategic thinking and understanding how digital experiences drive customer outcomes and engineering decisions shape product velocity and quality.

Job Role Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive consumer focused technology roadmap that supports the Consumer digital transformation goals and aligns to Just more broadly.

  • Own the technical vision and design of our digital platform, balancing scalability, speed and maintainability.

  • Lead end to end development of digital products – initially hands on, building API’s, front and back end components and scaling the team.

  • Collaborate with product and design to shape and deliver compelling, user-centred experiences aligned with our retirement mission.

  • Make smart build vs buy decisions including integrations with financial tools and platforms, analytics, content systems and personalisation engines.

  • Drive high quality engineering practices including testing, dev ops, security, accessibility and performance. Working with wider group colleagues to ensure alignment with architectural principles and development practices.

  • Bridge technical and commercial. Clearly communicating trade-offs, timelines and opportunities to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Coach and support tech leads and other engineers, and encouraging them to communicate their vision more widely to the organisation.

Skills and Knowledge

  • You will have direct experience in engineering through software development – including both web and app

  • You will understand modern approaches to software development and latest thinking on how best to build motivated, mixed team to deliver quality software

  • Ability to interact and influence throughout your functional area and into the wider group

  • Experience managing the risks and incidents created by software and systems in a regulated environment

  • Understanding of product-market fit and growth metrics

Experience

  • Experience working in both large and small technology organisations

  • Experience with production incident management and post mortems

  • Non-functional experience including security and performance testing

  • Automated end-to-end and API testing tools and techniques

Company Benefits

  • A Competitive Salary, Pension Scheme and Life Assurance

  • Along with 25 Days Annual Leave plus an Additional Day on us for your Birthday

  • Private Medical Cover and Income Protection, just in case

  • A generous and highly achievable bonus scheme – paid annually based on individual and company performance against targets
