Purpose

Provide expert leadership in the internal credit rating process through the development of new methodologies and models, the review of credit ratings assigned by the origination team, and the validation of ratings and methodologies used or assigned by external fund managers

Job Role Accountabilities:

  • Lead the development and maintenance of internal credit rating methodologies and models for new asset classes, primarily in real estate and/or project finance.
  • Assess the robustness of credit rating methodologies applied by external fund managers.
  • Support the internal credit rating process by reviewing and challenging credit ratings and supporting materials prepared by the origination team.
  • Contribute to internal validation activities by producing shadow ratings for assets assessed by external fund managers.

Examples of Key Activities:

  • Develop and maintain internal credit rating methodologies and models across multiple asset classes, with a focus on real estate and/or project finance, ensuring alignment with external rating agency standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert to the origination team and Line 2, offering guidance and support on the application of internal rating methodologies as needed.
  • Review and challenge internal ratings and supporting materials prepared by the origination team, ensuring consistency, transparency, and robustness in the internal credit rating process.
  • Validate the methodologies used by external fund managers by assessing their approach against Just’s internal standards and applicable regulatory expectations.
  • Validate credit ratings assigned by fund managers by independently re-rating a sample of transactions using Just’s internal methodology and presenting the findings to the Credit Committee.

Essential for the role

  • Solid technical understanding of either the commercial real estate sector or project finance from a credit risk perspective
  • Strong understanding of the credit rating process, developed through experience at a rating agency, asset manager, insurance company, or bank.

Desirable

  • Professional qualifications such as CFA, ACA, or ACCA would be an asset.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong analytical and credit assessment skills, with the ability to apply structured judgement across various asset classes and transactions.
  • Solid technical knowledge of either the commercial real estate sector or project finance, with the ability to assess key credit drivers and structural features.
  • Familiarity with rating agency methodologies and/or internal methodologies for real estate or project finance transactions would be an asset.
  • Proficient Excel user, capable of building and operating credit rating models of moderate complexity to support the application of internal methodologies.
  • Effective written communication skills, with the ability to produce structured rating memos, methodology papers, and committee materials.
  • Strong stakeholder management and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage cross-functionally across the origination team and second line of defence.
  • Confidence to challenge constructively, balancing independence with collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs under time pressure.

Experience

  • Proven experience in credit analysis or credit ratings, developed through roles at a rating agency, asset manager, insurer, or bank.
  • Practical experience assessing complex transactions, particularly in real estate or project finance, including analysis of structures and legal documentation.
  • Involvement in the development or application of credit rating methodologies, including scorecard-based and qualitative frameworks; experience designing internal methodologies is an advantage.
  • Hands-on experience operating internal rating models, using Excel or similar tools to apply methodologies and assign internal credit ratings.
