Tech Lead - Digital D2C

Location: London – hybrid 50%

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 35 hours

Role Purpose

The Tech Lead provides hands‑on technical leadership within a cross‑functional product squad, supporting the delivery of high‑quality digital experiences across mobile and web platforms within our D2C business area.

The role works closely with Product and Design to shape technical direction, guide day‑to‑day engineering delivery, and ensure solutions meet agreed quality, security, and sustainability standards. In partnership with the Principal Engineering Lead, the role contributes to architectural alignment and the continuous improvement of engineering practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead technical delivery within a product squad, ensuring solutions align with engineering standards and architectural principles

  • Act as a technical partner to the Product Owner, supporting planning, prioritisation, and delivery aligned to roadmap goals

  • Provide clear technical direction and guidance to engineers within the squad

  • Remain hands‑on across the stack, contributing to design and coding while supporting delivery progress

  • Apply modern engineering practices to improve quality, reliability, and maintainability

  • Support continuous improvement of engineering flow, delivery predictability, and developer experience

  • Collaborate with the Principal Engineering Lead on platform, architecture, and cross‑squad initiatives

  • Support the growth of engineers through mentoring, coaching, and constructive feedback

Examples of Key Activities

  • Lead technical design and delivery activities, including solution design and implementation

  • Work with the Product Owner to assess feasibility, manage trade‑offs, and plan iterative delivery

  • Write production‑quality code, pair with engineers, and participate in code reviews

  • Encourage good engineering practices within the squad, including testing, CI/CD, documentation, observability, and security

  • Contribute to architectural discussions and longer‑term technical decisions

  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and blockers early and support their resolution

  • Facilitate technical discovery and solution workshops when exploring new features or changes

  • Contribute to improvements that benefit multiple squads, such as shared components or developer tooling

What We're looking for

Essential

  • Hands‑on full‑stack development experience using .NET (C#), TypeScript, React, and React Native

  • Experience building web and mobile applications using modern frameworks such as Next.js and Expo

  • Practical experience designing and developing APIs and distributed systems, including event‑driven architectures

  • Experience working with relational databases, including data modelling and performance considerations

  • Production experience in cloud‑native environments, particularly Azure, including serverless components

  • Experience with containerised applications and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes

  • Hands‑on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and working with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform)

  • Experience applying automated testing practices, including unit, integration, and end‑to‑end testing

  • Ability to support live systems by diagnosing issues using logs and observability tooling and contributing to incident resolution

  • Experience leading or supporting technical delivery within a product squad

Desirable

  • Background working with or modernising legacy platforms, including WordPress or PHP‑based systems

  • Knowledge of using GraphQL to support client‑side data consumption

  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as Dynatrace or similar platforms

  • Involvement in blameless incident reviews and practices that support operational learning and improvement

  • Experience operating in environments that combine modern and legacy technologies
