Head of Actuarial Model Development

London – Hybrid (minimum 50% office based)

We have brand new role in our growing Retail business, for  a Head of Head of Actuarial Model Development, to lead on the development, implementation and ongoing management of pricing systems and actuarial models, ensuring that our Retail Products can be priced quickly and accurately and that the RAR (Retail Actuarial & Reinsurance) team has efficient and automated processes and tools.

This role would be idea for someone as a (part)qualified actuary with significant experience with open source codes (particular Python) and working with actuarial models within a wider environment, who is looking to grow a new function

This role provide a fantastic opportunity to help shape, build and assist in the deployment of longer term strategy  in Retail, by becoming the subject matter expert on the Retail actuarial models and systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and owning the Retail Pricing Models, in particular the Retirement Income model(s) and the LTM pricing model

  • Lead the development and maintenance of pricing systems and models in Retail Actuarial, including the development of systems to make them more efficient, automated and robust

  • Identifying and specifying pricing system developments needed to support all Retail products and improve the operational efficiency and capability of the team.

  • Maintain coding standards for Retail models, in line with any Group standards, and take the lead on training the RAR team in-line with these standards

  • Lead the Retail Model Development team, setting and monitoring objectives to ensure delivery of required outputs to achieve the Retail strategy. Monitor engagement across the team, develop and deliver on engagement action plans to manage a highly engaged, high performing team.

  • Ensuring Retail Actuarial & Reinsurance tools, models and documentation are complete and robust, and working with second line and auditors to ensure effective review and controls are in place and demonstrated.

  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Architecture teams to ensure the interoperability of the pricing models within the wider Retail systems architecture

  • Act as point of contact for RAR team with Group IT and as a Subject Matter Expert for coding within the RAR team

Skills and Experience:

  • Part qualified or qualified FIA, FFA or equivalent.

  • Upper second class degree in a mathematical subject, or computer science or equivalent

  • Significant experience building models in Python, utilising Git, (ideally in the life insurance industry)

  • Proven experience in managing others, including proven experience in leading and managing actuarial development teams

  • Excellent communication skills across all level, in particular with senior management

  • Experience with IT development processes and delivery lifecycles; development methodology; release strategy and configuration management; development tools, and applications across full project lifecycles

  • Experience with Power BI or a similar data visualisation tool is desirable

  • Experience with DevOps tools and practices including CI/CD pipelines, version control and test automation

  • Experience developing in alignment with core non-functional requirements inc. performance, security, maintainability, and observability

  • Experience using Microsoft Azure, C# .net core, Docker, and Azure Kubernetes (desirable but note essential)

  • Experience using Microsoft development tooling, including Visual Studio Code and Azure DevOps (desirable but note essential)
