Aden Risk Manager

I started at Just in January 2015 as an intern, doing market research. I had hoped to be able to get a permanent position with the group, because it has a really good reputation. So when I saw the position for risk analyst on the internal vacancies web page, I applied for it.

Since I started in this role, my responsibilities have been growing almost weekly. At first I was doing research and learning about our risk management reporting system. After I absorbed that, I started going out to people's desks to help them in defining their risks and using the system. Recently I’ve been supporting the facilitation of workshops around examining specific risk-related scenarios.

I constantly have to try to put myself in somebody else's shoes, to understand what they do every day so that I can discuss their risks with them.

When I came here for my interview, I got a sense right away that it was a place that I would feel comfortable in. Just walking around, you hear people talking and they're smiling. I felt it was a warm environment, and that feeling hasn’t really gone away.

I've recommended the company to a few of my friends already. I tell them that in 10 years it's gone from someone's sitting room to several buildings in the UK and internationally, and that it’s an innovative company with a lot of opportunities.

Oli Customer Services Team Manager

I started at Just in February 2011 as a quotes coordinator, which is the first point of contact for all quotes and general enquiries from financial intermediaries.

Two years later, I became a team manager. My role involves doing a lot of different things like overseeing training, interviewing job candidates, and helping my team members with their development. Recently I have been involved in implementing a customer services team for one of our new products.

Working here has provided me with a lot of opportunities. I’m doing an MBA, through which I have learned a lot about different areas of the company. The course is very academic but the real value is in working with managers from many different industries and cultures. My managers are very supportive; they allow me flexibility for study days and for scheduling my work around exams.

When you ask someone what they like about working some place, they always say the people – and that really is the case for me.

Everyone's friendly, wants to help and see each other grow. Employees here want to provide a great service to both internal and external customers. The company has grown, but that customer service culture hasn’t changed – it’s something we work hard on.

Elma IT Infrastructure Manager

I started at Just in 2007, with the Architecture and Governance team in IT, which supported all aspects of supporting and delivering server and networking infrastructure and software releases. As the company grew, the team expanded and I gravitated towards a primarily customer-facing role, responding to IT requests. In 2011, I became IT Operations team manager.

My job is varied; some days I could be meeting one-to-one with a team member, attending a planning meeting for disaster recovery testing, or advising someone on the team when they need to escalate a request or incident. Making sure our processes and policies are being followed is another important part of my role.

I always look forward to coming into work because every day is different. My role is interesting and challenging; there’s never a boring day here. I also appreciate the culture; the company recruits people who are committed, kind and considerate.

Bethan Trinh Actuarial Intern

Why did you choose to join Just?

I initially applied to Just because I was interested in an actuarial career, and wanted to learn what the job entailed. My interview was a positive experience; the panel were friendly and welcoming, which gave a great first impression of the working environment at Just.

What were you involved in during your internship and what did you learn?

My internship was with the Retirement Lending Actuarial Team. The team are responsible for the development and management of the company’s international annuity and lifetime mortgage products.

From day one, I was made to feel part of the team; I was given real responsibility and was encouraged to get involved in what I found interesting. I expressed an interest in the application and development of my programming skills. There was a need for a financial projection tool to be produced, and my manager arranged for me to take part, supporting me through the process. My main project for the internship was producing this financial projection tool, but I also had the opportunity to produce yield curves and cost quotations for different products.

One of the most interesting and useful parts of the internship were talks from different actuarial teams. They gave an insight into the wide variety of roles, and how roles differed between teams.

What are your views on the Just internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed the work and overall environment at Just, and would highly recommend the internship to students interested in an actuarial career. I took on several professional responsibilities, and completed work that was both interesting and challenging. Everyone at Just was very approachable and willing to answer any questions I had. The Retirement Lending and International Development Team were especially welcoming and supportive making the whole experience very enjoyable.

Why did you choose to join Just?

Coming out of university, I was looking for jobs relevant to my Maths degree in my local area as I wasn’t sure about what type of career to pursue. I heard about Just through a family member and after researching, I was drawn in by how much Just genuinely care about their customers. I found out there were many opportunities for Maths graduates in the business and luckily found the Actuarial internship opportunity available online. I knew on a basic level what an actuary was and I saw the internship as a chance to find out whether an actuarial career was for me.

What were you involved in during your internship and what did you learn?

My internship programme lasted 8 weeks and I worked in the Retirement Lending Actuarial team based in Reigate. My main assignment over the internship was to build a Forecasting model from scratch that predicted pricing margins in the next 3 months. It was definitely overwhelming at first! But the support provided and help on hand was excellent. By the end I had newfound confidence using Excel by learning various tools and functions along the way as well as learning all about the Lifetime Mortgage products Just offer.

Also, I had the opportunity to speak to actuaries across the business who were always willing to answer questions. This involved visiting the London office with organised meetings for us to have a chance to talk to the actuaries about their roles and ask them anything we wanted.

What are your views on the Just internship?

The internship made me realise that the actuarial route was for me - I’m now an Actuarial Analyst in the Retirement Lending team and studying for the exams with the aim of becoming a qualified actuary! Whether you know you want to become an actuary or not, the experience on the internship will be valuable. You will definitely gain work-based and technical skills that will help in the future.
