Software Engineering Manager  - Technical Delivery

Location: London – hybrid 50%

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 35 hours

This role provides technical leadership rooted in real engineering insight—remaining close to the code to guide design and implementation while upholding high standards in architecture and delivery. Its purpose is to ensure teams build scalable, reliable software that supports business goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading architecture and design sessions, ensuring solutions are logical, scalable, and aligned with engineering standards.

  • Drive delivery outcomes, managing sprint execution, resolving technical blockers, and maintaining accountability for quality.

  • Embed a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and structured problem-solving.

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and guiding architecture and system design decisions.

  • Promote engineering best practices and technical standards across teams.

  • Manage and develop teams, including permanent and contingent resources, ensuring alignment, engagement, and performance.

  • Serve as the main point of contact for delivery risks, dependencies, and stakeholder communications, providing clear updates for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Manage resource allocation, capacity planning, and prioritisation across multiple teams and deliveries.

  • Oversee end-of-life systems and technical debt, ensuring timely prioritisation, stakeholder alignment, and delivery of remediation activities.

  • Identify gaps in current practices and drive initiatives to improve throughput, quality, reliability, and documentation, using metrics and structured problem-solving.

  • Collaborate with Lead Engineers and Architects to ensure alignment with broader technical direction.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience as a senior engineer, architect or technical lead within financial services.

  • Strong technical leadership, staying close to the code to review, challenge and guide real engineering solutions

  • Deep understanding of modern architecture, system design and complex technical problem‑solving

  • Track record of driving engineering standards, best practices and consistently high technical quality

  • Team management experience with experience leading multi‑team delivery across major transformation or large‑scale technical programmes

  • Skilled in Agile delivery with accountability for sprint outcomes, technical quality and effective stakeholder communications

  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex technical concepts for technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Platforms & Infrastructure: Azure, AKS, Docker, Windows Server (on-prem), SQL Server, MongoDB

  • IAM & App Gateways: Okta, APIM, Apigee

  • Monitoring & Observability: Dynatrace, Application Insights

  • CI/CD & DevOps: Azure DevOps Pipelines, SonarCloud, GitHub

  • Architecture & Patterns: Microservices, Event-Driven Architecture, Domain-Driven Design, Modern Scalable Design Principles
